When we talk about web hosting servers, there are three principal categories - shared web hosting servers, VPS (private virtual servers) and dedicated servers. Shared servers host multiple customers and therefore the system resources per hosting account are limited, virtual private server packages offer more server configuration independence, but also affect other virtual hosting servers on the hardware node if utilized rashly, and dedicated servers give you the chance to carry out everything you want without meddling with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are normally much more expensive than shared web hosting servers or virtual hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The answer is rather simple. If your company has a busy web site, or simply has very exact server architecture requirements, the proper option would be a dedicated server. For someone who is ready to invest in safety and stability, the higher price is not a concern. You receive full root privileges and can use 100% of the dedicated server's resources without anyone else utilizing these resources and meddling with your online portals.

Hardware specs

Most shared hosting providers, incl. us at Steele Design Studio limited, provide different hardware architectures you can choose from in line with your demands. The configurations offer different types of processors, a different amount of cores, different RAM memory and hard disk drive sizes and different web traffic allowances. You can select a Control Panel, which is handy software if you wish to utilize the dedicated web server for website hosting purposes only and prefer not to use SSH for all the changes you will be making. We offer three kinds of Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The hosting Control Panel of your preference

If you are a self-confident Linux user (our dedicated hosting servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based OSs), you could manage your dedicated server via an SSH tunnel exclusively. That, however, could be inconvenient, even more so if you decide to give full root privileges to someone else who has less technical expertise than yourself. That is why having hosting Control Panel software activated is an excellent idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP software that we offer does not offer full root privileges and is mainly appropriate for someone who has lots of web pages that require a lot of system resources, but wants to administer the web portals, databases and e-mail boxes via an intuitive hosting CP. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting CPs, on the other hand, grant full server root access and have three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell hosting accounts instead of using the dedicated hosting server solely for yourself, you should pick one of these two.

Server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your dedicated hosting web server, like an unresponsive Apache or an outage, it is good to have some sort of monitoring platform enabled. Here at Steele Design Studio limited the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated server as well. Backups are also a bonus option - the web hosting distributor offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could choose a kind of RAID that would allow you to have the same data on 2 disk drives as a precaution in case of a disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given full root-level access deletes something accidentally.
